Two BBC Symphony Orchestra violists play MacMillan, Bennett, Yun and Bridge at Croydon Minster on Friday 6 November at 1.10pm. Free, with donations welcome.
Two violists from the BBC Symphony Orchestra are playing a free lunchtime concert in the middle of Croydon this Friday. Matthias Wiesner and Peter Mallinson perform as a viola duo at Croydon Minster on Church Street on Friday 6 November at 1.10pm.
Croydon Minster says the programme takes in works by James MacMillan, Richard Rodney Bennett, Isang Yun and Frank Bridge. Admission is free, and the Minster says donations are “gratefully received”. Its poster for the series says the money goes to Minster funds.
How the Friday recitals work
The concert is part of the Minster’s autumn series of Friday lunchtime recitals, which began on 18 September. Each one is “40 minutes of music on Fridays at 1.10pm”, according to the Minster’s poster, so a 1.10pm start should finish by about 1.50pm. The Minster’s own invitation is to “bring a packed lunch and enjoy first class music in beautiful surroundings”.
When it announced the series in August, the Minster said: “As always, our performers will include students from our local schools and London conservatoires, as well as emerging international artists.”
What is still to come this term
After Friday’s viola duo, four more recitals are left before Christmas, all on Fridays at 1.10pm and all free:
- 13 November: Nicole Wu, piano
- 20 November: Whitgift School
- 27 November: Josh Harris, piano
- 4 December: Laine Theatre Arts Choir
The earlier part of the series brought organists William Campbell and Sean Maxwell, the four-hands piano pair Chiara Naldi and Jasper van der Klis, the Mikrokosmos Guitar Duo, the Pennine Chamber Collective, pianist Paul Taylor and Trio Kairo.
