The Croydon Night of Dance takes over a corner of Addiscombe on Tuesday 8 September. Dancers gather outside the Oval Tavern, 131 Oval Road, CR0 6BR, at around 7pm. It is free to watch and there is no ticket.

The organisers are North Wood Morris Men, who host the evening. Their own listing notes a change of venue this year, so if you went last time, check the address (North Wood Morris).

Who is dancing

The line-up is not fixed in advance. North Wood Morris say they do not yet know exactly who will perform, but expect:

  • North Wood Morris Men
  • Northwood Way
  • Old Palace Clog
  • Wild Hunt Bedlam

Sides usually take turns through the evening rather than dancing together, so arriving late still gets you something.

The East Croydon Community Organisation’s listing says the evening moves on from the Oval Tavern to the Builders Arms on Leslie Park Road, a few minutes away (ECCO). The organisers’ own page lists only the Oval Tavern, so treat the second venue as likely rather than confirmed.

Getting there

North Wood Morris publish the transport detail themselves, which is more than most event listings manage:

  • Buses 197, 312, 367 and 410 stop at Lesley Grove, in Cherry Orchard Road
  • Bus 289 stops at Lower Addiscombe Road / Davidson Road, and at Morland Road, both on the A222
  • the pub is about 15 minutes’ walk from Lebanon Road tram stop and from East Croydon station

What it means for you

It is a free, outdoor, weeknight thing to do that finishes early enough for a school night, and it happens on a public street rather than behind a door. That is rarer in Croydon than it should be.

Two practical points. It is outdoors, so it depends on the weather, and the sides confirm on the night rather than in advance. And because the venues are pubs, the dancing is in the street outside rather than inside, so you do not need to buy anything to watch.
