Croydon town centre businesses voted to renew Croydon BID for 2027 to 2032: 92.8% of votes and 97.7% by rateable value in favour, on a 63.9% turnout.
Businesses in Croydon town centre have voted to keep Croydon BID for another five years. The ballot renews the Croydon Town Centre Business Improvement District for a fifth five-year term, running from 1 April 2027 to 31 March 2032.
The result, announced by Croydon Council on 22 October, was not close:
- 92.8% of votes cast were in favour
- 97.7% in favour when votes are weighted by rateable value
- 63.9% turnout
Both measures of the yes vote were above 90% (Croydon Council, 22 October).
Who ran the vote
The ballot was administered by the council’s Electoral Services team and stayed open for 31 days. The council said the result gives Croydon BID “a renewed mandate to continue delivering services, projects and initiatives that support the town centre”, and that the new term “will enable the organisation to build on this work and continue responding to the priorities of its members over the next five years”.
The council described the BID as “a key partner in promoting the town centre and delivering programmes that benefit businesses, employees, residents and visitors”, and said it would keep working alongside the BID, businesses and partners “to support the ongoing regeneration and success of Croydon town centre”.
What the BID says
Matthew Sims, the chief executive of Croydon BID, said:
“The result is a true demonstration of a business community united together in working towards delivering progress and momentum for our town centre. There is a clear appreciation that there are significant challenges facing high streets and town centres like ours, but that these issues are to be met together, in partnership and in collaboration. Croydon BID is, as ever, committed, to supporting our business community, delivering across the next five years and is honoured, grateful and excited by the opportunity.”
What the Mayor says
The Executive Mayor of Croydon, Jason Perry, said:
“We welcome the strong support shown by businesses for the continuation of Croydon BID. This result demonstrates a shared commitment to the future of our town centre and recognition of the value that can be achieved when businesses work together on common priorities.”
“Croydon town centre is continuing to evolve, and partnerships such as this one play an important role in supporting businesses, driving investment and helping create a place where people want to live, work, visit and do business. We look forward to continuing to work closely with Croydon BID over the next five years.”
What comes next
The new term starts on 1 April 2027. The council’s announcement does not set out the BID’s plans for the new term; those are the BID’s own, decided with its members.
