Croydon Christmas trains: last year Thameslink's last trains arrived by about 9pm on Christmas Eve, none ran on 25 or 26 December. Trams, buses and parking.

Getting in and out of Croydon over Christmas comes down to three dates. On Christmas Eve trains wind down early: last year Thameslink said its last trains would reach their final destinations by around 9pm. On Christmas Day no trains run, and last year TfL’s only services were taxis, private hire, hire bikes and Dial-a-Ride. On Boxing Day Thameslink runs no trains and Southern only a very limited service, while trams and buses run a Sunday service. The operators have not yet published their plans for Christmas 2026, and National Rail lists no engineering work on Croydon’s lines over the holiday so far. This page sets out last year’s pattern, which is the best guide until they do, and will be updated as soon as the 2026 plans are out.

The quick answer

  • Christmas Eve: last year a Saturday-style service ran until about 5pm, then fewer trains, with last trains arriving by around 9pm (Thameslink).
  • Christmas Day: no trains, and no TfL buses or trams. Boxing Day: no Thameslink, a very limited Southern service, and a Sunday service on trams and buses.
  • 2026 plans are not out yet. Network Rail announced last year’s Christmas works for Croydon’s lines on 19 November. Check back then.

Christmas 2025, day by day

This is how the holiday ran last year on the railway through East Croydon, taken from Thameslink’s festive travel page and Network Rail’s announcement of 19 November 2025.

The engineering work that hit Croydon last year

  • East Croydon: Network Rail used the Christmas shutdown to replace the conductor rail, the third rail that powers the trains, at East Croydon.
  • Thameslink to Sutton, 27 to 31 December: no Thameslink trains between London Blackfriars and Sutton via Mitcham Junction or Wimbledon. Rail tickets were accepted on local buses, trams and the Underground.
  • Sunday 4 January: buses replaced trains between Purley and East Grinstead, and between Oxted and Uckfield. Victoria to Reigate trains ran only between Redhill and Reigate. No Thameslink trains ran through central London, and London Bridge to Brighton trains ran to an amended timetable.

There is no guarantee the same lines will close this year. Network Rail picks different sites each Christmas.

Trams, buses and the Overground

TfL’s Christmas announcement of 2 December 2025 set out the pattern across London last year:

  • Christmas Eve: services ran but finished early.
  • Christmas Day: no service on the majority of public transport. The services TfL said would run on Christmas Day were taxis, private hire, Santander Cycles, rental e-scooters, Dial-a-Ride and Victoria Coach Station, so no buses or trams.
  • Boxing Day: a Sunday service on London Trams, London buses and the Underground. Some parts of the network did not run at all.
  • New Year’s Eve: apart from planned closures, services ran all night.

For Croydon that means the tram is the most reliable way across the borough on Boxing Day, when most of the trains through East Croydon are not running.

Driving and parking

  • Parking: last year Croydon Council said parking charges and restrictions did not apply on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, and applied as normal on every other day (Croydon Council). Tariffs for the rest of the season are on our parking in Croydon page.
  • ULEZ: it applied as normal over Christmas except on Christmas Day, according to TfL.
  • Congestion Charge: suspended from 25 December to 1 January last year, for anyone driving into central London.

Already booked for November and December 2026

National Rail’s list of planned engineering work, checked on 25 September 2026, shows nothing yet on Croydon’s lines between 19 December and the New Year. It does already show closures in the run-up:

  • Friday 6 November: after 11.45pm, no London Overground trains between New Cross Gate and West Croydon or Crystal Palace (National Rail).
  • Sunday 8 November: engineering work in the Norwood Junction and East Croydon area. Trains that usually run between London Bridge and Caterham via Norwood Junction will not run (National Rail).
  • Sunday 29 November: until about 8am, Thameslink trains are diverted between East Croydon and London Bridge and do not call at Norwood Junction (National Rail).
  • Monday 30 November to Thursday 3 December: from about 10.30pm to the end of service, buses replace trains between East Croydon or Purley and Caterham or Tattenham Corner (National Rail).
